Wikipedia

A wealth of information in one place. For free. Theoretically easily manipulated by people spreading dis/misinformation, but in practice nearly as good as any mainstream media outlet (though they set the bar pretty low).

Yahoo News

I switched to YN after GN went with auto-'personalization'. In general I've been happy with YN, except for the fact that I've run across a few ads with mouseover link-opening. Sigh... I should just subscribe to a deadtree newspaper or something...

Utilities

DuckDuckGo Search

Much as Google made its name for search quality, they continue to confound me with annoyances such as personalized search results, and most recently 'instant' searching. It's sad it took me so long to find DDG whose mission statement of real privacy protection matches my fantasies of what Google would choose to do in some alternate universe where ponies grow on trees. And DDG's search results, while not as good ad Google, seem halfway decent.

Media

hulu

I must admit a minimal amount of respect for an internet TV service whose ad campaign portrays themselves as brain-sucking aliens. Shows I've watched recently on hulu- Hill Street Blues, Cleopatra 2525, News Radio, Kids In The Hall, ...

'Oh greatest of the mass media, thank you for elevating emotion, reducing thought, and stifling imagination. Thank you for the artificiality of quick solutions and the insidious manipulation of human desires for commercial purposes. This bowl of lukewarm tapioca represents my brain. I offer it in humble sacrifice. Bestow thy flickering light forever.'

Bill Moyers Journal on PBS

See these two links for what I consider the essential introduction to Bill Moyers.

History and Politics

Camden-28 POV (PBS)

The story of domestic spying, incitement, and entrapment by the FBI in the 70's against the anti-war politically affiliated. Possibly a case against the post-9/11 teardown of the FBI/CIA information sharing firewall.

Beyond Vietnam, by Martin Luter King Jr, 04/04/67

The speech given by MLK exactly one year before his death, in which he breaks his silence, and begins opposing the United States' military industrial complex.

Linux Appliances

Media: ChannelRegister.co.uk review of SuSE-Gallery

"Novell has not said how much money – if any – SUSE Studio has driven through these appliance support contracts. Market watcher IDC is projecting that the software appliance market will grow to $1.18bn by 2012, and Novell could get an infrastructure slice of that."

I found this at LWN. An article about SuSE-Studio's gallery of linux-based computer appliances for available download.
