bug#1: ap search mode sometimes hangs

I've noticed that sometimes the connecting to ap mode hangs, not even 
respecting it's timeout value.  Probably a blocking call?

WORKAROUND: hitting start a couple times to retry everything seems to work

bug#0: handshake gets corrupted

This is already worked around in the code, but indicitave of some nasty
memory corruption problem, thus deserves mention here till fixed or
further explained.
